UK terror threat will not be raised at emergency COBRA meeting, Downing Street suggests

UK terror threat will not be raised at emergency COBRA meeting, Downing Street suggestsThe UK’s threat level will not be raised at today’s emergency COBRA meeting, Downing Street has suggested. As we told you earlier (07.51 post), Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is set to hold the emergency response committee meeting to discuss the domestic security risk from the conflict. “I wouldn’t get in speculating on the terror threat. You’re right that it’s done by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre rather than set through a COBRA meeting,” the PM’s spokesman told journalists. The official said he “can’t be definitive” on whether a change is being discussed at the meeting.”We have expert security services and police forces working around the clock to try and keep the public safe. Clearly we recognise the potential for increased challenges due to the ongoing situation in Israel and Gaza. We’re very mindful of that,” he added. Antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents have increased significantly since Hamas launched its attack on Israel. At the moment, MI5 regards the country’s terror threat as substantial, meaning an attack is likely. It has been at this level since February last year when it was lowered from “severe”, meaning an attack is highly likely. The remaining higher category of threat level is critical, meaning an attack is highly likely in the near future.
